Two insurance policies, one protection.

Protected cultivation in polytunnels or hail protection nets is becoming increasingly popular in Germany

Gartenbau-Versicherung VVaG and Vereinigte Hagel VVaG offer comprehensive insurance for crops and weather protection systems.

Protected cultivation in the fruit, vegetable and special crop sectors continues to grow: More and more farms are using polytunnels or hail protection nets to protect sensitive crops such as strawberries and fruit trees from the elements. However, with increasing mechanisation and higher investment, the risks are also growing – not least due to the increase in extreme weather events such as hail, storms and heavy rain.

Gartenbau-Versicherung VVaG and Vereinigte Hagel VVaG responded to this development several years ago with a closely coordinated cooperation and now offer comprehensive insurance cover for protected cultivation. The HORTISECUR® policy from Gartenbau-Versicherung and the Secufarm® programme from Vereinigte Hagel complement each other perfectly: they cover not only damage to technical equipment, polytunnels and protection systems, but also to the sensitive crops themselves.

According to the latest surveys by AMI (Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft), protected cultivation in Germany is at an all-time high. The demand for a stable supply, especially of fresh vegetables, is driving the trend towards weather-protected cultivation methods. At the same time, according to AMI, reports of damage caused by severe weather events are also on the rise. Hail in particular poses an increasing threat, as demonstrated by recent hailstorms that caused severe damage to both protective structures and crops.

‘A single hailstorm can not only destroy the current harvest, but also cause considerable damage to infrastructure,’ explains Kai Schneider, an expert in this field at Gartenbau-Versicherung. ‘It is therefore crucial to insure both the facility and the crops under a protective umbrella.’

Daniel Rittershaus, Head of Communications at Vereinigte Hagel, also emphasises: ‘With Secufarm®, we offer flexible, modular multi-risk insurance that is particularly suitable for specialised businesses in protected cultivation. Thanks to our cooperation, we can now provide even more targeted advice and create individually tailored insurance concepts.’

Businesses that rely on modern, weather-protected cultivation are invited to seek detailed advice from their local risk advisor.
