Sulzer Rosen is now managed by the fourth generation of the family. Roses are produced for the Munich and Karlsruhe wholesale markets on 1.5 hectares under foil and glass and on 5 hectares of open-field cultivation. Depending on the weather, the roses are sold from May to October. They are then prepared for overwintering.

Q and A

Our members’ concerns are our concerns.

Andreas Sulzer

Management & Sales Munich Wholesale

1. What are your responsibilities and tasks and how long have you been doing this job?

As is often the case in family businesses, I started working in our company from an early age. I took over the business ten years ago and have been responsible for management and sales at the Munich wholesale market ever since.

2. In your opinion, what makes your company special?

The special thing about our business is the huge range of roses – we have over 100 different varieties on offer.

3. And which one is your favorite?

The one that’s been sold 🙂

4. Who are your customers and where can your products be found?

We sell our potted and cut roses at the wholesale flower markets in Munich and Karlsruhe.

5. What challenges are you currently faced with in your daily work?

Besides the increase in fertilizer and energy prices, we are very concerned about the contamination of groundwater with perfluorinated and polyfluorinated chemicals (PFCs). The entire Rhine Valley is affected and the businesses concerned need to find solutions to deal with this.

6. Which risks do you consider to be particularly critical for your business operations?

The greatest risks include extreme weather conditions, especially hail, storms and drought.

7. Have you ever had a damage event in your company and if so, what kind of damage was it?

About four years ago we experienced some hail damage and three years ago damage caused by a storm.

8. How have you experienced the support provided by Gartenbau-Versicherung so far?

Growing open-field roses would be impossible without insurance. We have never had any problems with Gartenbau-Versicherung, and we find their support absolutely satisfactory.
