A beautiful old poplar tree on a neighboring property literally came crashing down on a horticultural business in the Lower Rhine region – when it toppled onto a greenhouse during a storm.

Glass and structural components were severely damaged. Unfortunately, only the glass was insured – a loss quickly covered by Gartenbau-Versicherung. However, the greenhouse structure also needs repair. On top of that, it was difficult to determine who was responsible for the cleanup – the affected business or the neighbor? Especially since a closer look revealed that the tree was no longer completely healthy.

Of course, an agreement can usually be reached. But perhaps it never had to come to this. “I strongly advise horticultural businesses to keep an eye on the trees on and around their property – and, if in doubt, to proactively speak with neighbors if there are concerns about the stability of any tree,” says Herbert Janßen, Risk Consultant at Gartenbau-Versicherung.

This is particularly important against the backdrop of increasing extreme weather events. Even healthy trees can fall during storms – weakened trees are even more at risk. That’s why it’s crucial to monitor the health of trees and ensure adequate insurance coverage. After all, it’s not just unhealthy trees that cause trouble. The risk consultants at Gartenbau-Versicherung are happy to assist with risk assessments and provide advice on suitable insurance solutions.
